Tuesday, May 07, 2013     Dubuque, Iowa

Yesterday we arrived at the Flexsteel Plant in Dubuque, Iowa.  We checked in with Lisa and she told us they would take our RV Sofa seats out of the RV today. We look forward to having firmer seating for the couch.   We asked about some places to visit and then settled in next to the plant for the night.

Kind of weird but they did provide electricity.  We just locked up good and closed all the curtains.  I had a restless night with the traffic and knowing we didn’t have neighboring campers here.  I was happy when the sun came up.

The started working on the couch at 8:30 the next morning and went sightseeing.  We left the RV in the hands of Flexsteel and went across the river to the little town of Galena, IL. We walked through the quaint little streets and at lunch at little restaurant built in the 1800’s. It was similar to Mount Dora but even older.

After leaving Galena we went to the Fenelon Place Elevator Company in Dubuque, Iowa. This is on the corner of 4th and Bluff and this elevator was built by a resident who lived on the Bluff up above. He was the Bank President and later a State Senator and it took over an hour to get to work at the bank and yet lived 2 blocks away. He had to go all the way around the bluff to get to the bottom. It was built in 1882 for his personal use. When it burned years later, he had it made for the public and sold shares to the people who lived on the bluff because they always asked if they could ride it. Ton took it to the top and took these beautiful pictures from there.

I took this picture of Ton going up as the other
one came down.

This is used a lot as it is the easiest way for the residents to go downtown.  I spoke to a resident and
she said it was fun living up there but the elevator makes life a lot easier.

Ton took this of me from the top of the Bluff

They did a beautiful job on the couch and we did this sightseeing while they did the work.  They were finished at noon and we headed to Humboldt, IA where the Born Free RV’s are built.  We will visit the plant tomorrow.

This looks like a very interesting little town. I'm glad you got better "seating" for the RV. Had a nice time with Kelli, Kyli & Graison - now trying to get normal again. Will send a picture to your email addy - not sure when you can get it. Love you, loving our trip.

After all the amazing campsites you've stayed at, I can see how this was a bit of a departure, but at least they took care of you seats and there was such a great small town to visit while it was being done.
