June 6 & 7, 2013

We stayed in the little town of Port Orford, Oregon to get caught up on necessities.  We had wi-fi to look for somewhere to stay for the next several nights.  We also got caught up on laundry and other things.  Whenever we had some free time, we explored.

Port Orford is the oldest town site on the Oregon Coast and the most westerly in the contiguous 48 states. It also is one of only six harbors in the U.S. that take the boats out of the harbor each time they return from sea.
This Visitor Centers door was hand carved by a local artist.

It looks like the sea life is difficult without much pay;
but the fishermen love it.

We visited the Cape Blanco Lighthouse.Ton climbed it and it was pretty windy up there.
It was a quaint old town and we enjoyed it.

We also visited the Port Orford Lifeboat Station. Built in the 1800 it has defended
the coast well. During World War II, lookouts in the station grew to more than
100 Coast Guardsmen to stand guard. In 1942 the guardsmen of this station also
defended Japanese submarine attacks off the south Oregon coast.

This interesting barometer caught my attention.

Beautiful flower bushes around the station

and a stack of driftwood.

The driftwood I'm sitting is is as smooth as if it was sanded.

The highlight of the two days was this little seaside shack in the harbor, which had the best seafood we’ve had in a long time.  We had fresh locally caught Red Snapper very lightly breaded.  Nice place inside and the service and food were great.

Tomorrow we head to California.

California, Here I Come
Right back where I started from
where bowers of flowers
bloom in the spring
each morning at dawning
birdies sing at everything
a sunkissed miss said, "Don't be late!"
that's why I can hardly wait
open up that golden gate
California, Here I Come

Click and Enjoy!! We Love You!! Have Fun!

You are getting into the real history of the USA. I absolutely love it! What I love is the trip almost feels like just you two (and me of course) are the only ones around. This is definitely my choice of travel and vacation spots. I'm ready for California! Hugs & love, Betty
