May 11 & 12 – Fredericksburg, Texas

Fredericksburg, Texas

We left Beaumont at 8:00 this morning for a long 300-mile drive to Fredericksburg.  We stopped at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Park since it was on the route to our campground.  We had a very knowledgeable, guide who kept things very interesting.  We were glad we stopped; even though we didn't arrive at our campsite until 5:00 p.m.

The first thing we passed was this Lutheran Church
4 year old Lyndon learned to read and this one room school located near his home.

The birthplace of a President

The outside phone to keep in touch
Some of the cattle were in the show barn
Notice that the cattle have the Presidents initials
L.B.J. branded on their horns.  The branding
equipment is below.

As we approach Presidents home we first notice the airstrip
and Air Force 1 that he used.
The Presidential Seal on the plane

 His home was known as
the Texas White House because he spent 100 days
a year here entertaining dignitaries from all over the world.
He had 3 televisions in each room of the house to keep track
of the news.  The three sets only got 3 channels. ABC, CBS & NBC
They received this home on a trade.  When he got married
he lived in a home on one acre of property.  His Aunt who
knew they wanted some farm land had just became a widow
so asked him if he would like to trade her 1 acre of land and
small house in town for this on and all the cattle included.
Well, the young politician in his 20's was no dummy
so of course the trade was made

Through the years they added on a little.  I couldn't get
a picture of the whole thing but it is 8,500 sq. ft.

As we left the property, we drove past the Johnson Family Cemetery where
the President and his family are laid to rest.

MONDAY, May 12
We did some clean up in the RV this morning and then decided to get out and
visit “Enchanted Rock” State Natural area.
One of the oldest trail landmarks in Texas, The Rock is the second largest Granite formation in North America.  It was considered sacred by Indians and offered much needed protection for early settlers.

I am so proud of Ton for making it the 425 ft.
climb up the granite to the summit.  The
distance is not long, but climbing the rock
is not easy for anyone.
You can view part of the trail he walked
Picture looking down from part way up

The incline was steady and
cute little creatures like you see below
scurried around

The surface of the Summit

& my honey reached the top

Looking back from the bottom.

We took a walk in the little town of Fredericksburg on our way home

Before the storms set in tonight, we took a few pictures of our campsite here in Oakwood RV Park

Wow Ton - I'm impressed. I can't even make it to the top of Stone Mountain in GA because it scares me to death! Beautiful flowers but yikes on the storm. Be safe...There used to be a really neat antique place in Fredericksburg. I wish Carl could see these pictures - he'd love them as much as I do. Hugs & love

Betty, we wish Carl could see thiem too, however we have to believe he feels your happiness in his heart.
Nel, yes, your brother is wearing his sunglasses. I just wish he would wear them a little more often.

I had to remove the previous post because I was making too many errors while traveling on a bumpy road
